9 Months Already!

A few collages of Miss Adiel. She is growing like crazy, has four teeth and three on the way! The latest news being that her MRI results came back completely normal. Praise the Lord!

Does Air Exist?

This is an interesting article from Jason Lisle (Answers in Genesis ). Sounds like his book goes into greater detail on these main points, but he summarizes them well here:

A debate over biblical creation is a lot like a debate over the existence of air. Can you imagine two people debating whether or not air exists? What would the critic of air say?

Whatever his arguments, he would have to use air in order to make them. Not only is air crucial to the survival of the critic, but air would have to exist in order for his arguments to be heard and understood . . . . In order for the critic of air to be able to make an argument, it would have to be wrong.

Likewise, the evolutionist must use biblical creation principles in order to argue against biblical creation. In order for his argument to make sense, it would have to be wrong. Ironically, the fact that evolutionists are able to argue against creation proves that creation is true!

The three paragraphs above are an excerpt from my latest book, The Ultimate Proof of Creation (with foreword by Ken Ham, Answers in Genesis president). With the arguments presented in this new book, I demonstrate that biblical creation absolutely must be true because it is a prerequisite for knowledge and science. That is, if creation were not true, science (or knowledge about anything whatsoever) would be impossible. For example:

Orderly, mathematical laws of nature that describe the consistent clockwork operation of the universe are exactly what we would expect given that Christ upholds all things by the Word of His power (Hebrews 1:3). If the universe were really the chance product of a big bang, then why would it obey laws?

The fact that the human mind is capable of rational thought and that our senses can reliably probe the universe makes sense given that God created the human mind and sensory organs (Genesis 1:27; Proverbs 20:12).

An absolute, universal moral code by which we have knowledge of right and wrong only makes sense if there is a sovereign God who has created rules for us, and to whom we are accountable.
A lot of creationists are under the mistaken impression that evolutionists would believe in creation if they simply had more “evidence.” But the Bible tells us that people already have enough evidence of the God of creation. Romans 1:19–20 makes this clear: “because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. . . . so that they are without excuse.”

The key to defending the Christian faith—and sharing it with others—is to realize that the unbeliever already “knows” God, but has suppressed what he knows to be true. He denies with his lips what he knows in his heart. We can expose this suppressed knowledge of God by pointing out that the unbeliever unwittingly relies on creation principles when he attempts to reason or uses science or makes moral judgments.

Like the “critic of air,” the unbeliever relies on the God of creation to argue against the God of creation. While we cannot cover everything in a short article like this (such as how to counter possible criticisms of the above argument), The Ultimate Proof of Creation gives readers an absolutely irrefutable argument for the Christian worldview.

"Ma Ma" and "Da Da"

Last week, Adi started "talking" all over the place. Lots of "ba ba ba ba" goin on! Then, she started saying, "ma ma ma ma" ... very sweet! Then, while Kirk was finishing his morning diaper change (Adiel's diaper, that is), our girl said a clear, two-syllable "Dadda". Wow! Kirk was so touched he had to step away for a second (I love my hubby). When we ask her, "Adi, where is Momma/Dadda?", she usually looks at the right one.

I got to thinking about why it means so much when our children say our "names" for the first time. How can that little 'momma' or 'dadda' impact us on such a deep level? Perhaps, it's another picture God has given to show us how He feels when we call Him Father (or "Abba", which means "Daddy") for the first time. To have your own child call out to you is beautiful.

For God so loved the world (that includes all of us) that He sacrificed the life of His only Son, the One who called out to Him. He did this so that our sins would be cast as far as the east is from the west and so that we may have eternal life with Him -- He actually wants to be with us! He created you and me and yearns that all would come to call Him "Daddy" - to trust Him, rely on Him, and cling to Him ... just as our children do.

First Tooth: 7 Months!

Oh, my goodness! How cute. Adiel is getting her first tooth (her lower right)!! Ok, we know this happens to all babies, but it's really fun to see the lil thing coming up. No longer can Adi "gum" us ... that tooth is sharp! The second one is on its way.

Since her eye surgery, she is like a new baby - wanting to interact more, explore, reach for things, sit up, babble, etc. The Lord is so sweet to give us these precious times, as the first many months were very difficult.

Therefore, whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Whoever receives one little child like this in My name, receives Me. - Matthew 18:4-5

Memorial Day 2009

Kirk was itchin' to cook some meat on the ol' BBQ, so we drove over to a park close by and set up an all-American Memorial Day cook-out! We bought enough food for lots of people to stop by and grab a hot dog ... no one did, but we were ready. Kirk made his AMAZING "Rocky Top Chicken" and we all loved it. Seriously folks, this recipe is no ordinary chicken!

My mom did a great job setting up the table, Dad took photos, Adiel was super cute, Kirk cooked, and I ate. Our new friend, Michelle, joined us, too. She recently moved to the Tri-Cities from Indiana and also attends Calvary Chapel. After the food settled a bit, Kirk, Michelle, and I threw around the Nerf football. Kirk coached us in throwing and catching ... all I can say is, it's a good thing we have a sense of humor!

Prayers of gratitude go out to all the family members of soldiers who served our country and stood for the ideals and values the USA was originally founded on.

primarily expressed.

Some of the symptoms include:

1. Loss of direction
2. Foul vocal emissions
3. Amnesia of origin
4. Lack of peace and joy
5. Selfish or violent behavior
6. Depression or confusion in the mental component
7. Fearfulness
8. Idolatry
9. Rebellion

The Manufacturer, who is neither liable nor at fault for this defect, is
providing factory-authorized repair and service free of charge to correct
this defect.

The Repair Technician, Jesus, has most generously offered to bear the
entire burden of the staggering cost of these repairs. There is no
additional fee required.

The number to call for repair in all areas is: P-R-A-Y-E-R. Once

Adiel's Eye Surgery

5.11.09

Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. - Matthew 11:28

Kirk, Adiel and I arrived in Spokane today for Adi's pre-op appointment. We learned more about the surgery and signed the necessary paperwork. Kirk and I had peace about everything and know that your prayers were being answered. Thank you all so much for lifting our family up to Almighty God - He was right there with us!

Here are some shots I took in our hotel room the evening before the surgery. As you can see, Adi had quite a significant head tilt (30+ degrees). She would line everything up with her right eye. After the sequence of our sweet girl kissing Kirk's face, she left part of herself all over his eyes. Oh, my goodness! That was a first. Kirk handled it well and quickly washed the vomit out of his eyes. In case you were wondering, that stuff stings!

And, the last few are cute. Adi slept in a drawer! Great idea, Mom. She was snug as a bug in a ... drawer!

5.12.09

Kirk and I both got up early on the 12th (2:45 am) to feed Adiel one last time before the surgery. She ate and went right back to sleep. We all arrived at the hospital at 6:45 am. About an hour later, it was time. The nurse came out and scooped up Adi, who reached up to the nurse's face as if pulling it in to kiss her. Amazing.

The operation itself lasted only about 40 minutes, however, we waited close to an hour to allow for her to fall asleep, administer the IV, etc. Kirk and I prayed and the Lord gave us many comforting verses to cling to; really beautiful time.

Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. - James 4:8

The LORD is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; and He knows those who trust in Him. - Nahum 1:7

When the doctor came out, he said everything went as planned, which was a relief. He probed her tear duct which had been blocked, as well as the medial rectus recession (detaching and reattaching the muscle behind her left eye).

He suggested we get an MRI done of Adi at some point. He said he didn't recall ever seeing the various mis-wirings our girl has in any other patient he's helped (been practicing for about 30 years). The nerve issues she has are not unique, however, having them all going on in one little person is.

So, that's something to be praying for. He said that the MRI would be able to indicate possible problems she may have in the future.

Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. - Psalm 23:4

We are not concerned, though. As you can see from these photos (taken only a few hours after surgery), Adiel is doing great ... a little swollen, but still smiling. She was in a lot of pain as she came out of being asleep, cried a bunch, but after a good nap, she was quite content. We only needed to give her a little bit of Tylenol! The arm splints you will see helped her not rub her eye.

Her neck muscles are tense and she's slowly realizing she doesn't have to tip her head anymore. As a bonus, her left eye has drawn forward a bit, so both eyes are more symmetrical now. At the post-op appointment, her doctor was even amazed at how well everything went! He said the tilt is gone! Most likely just a bit of neck tension causing what we see now.

This is a total answer to prayer and a miracle! Adiel has binocular vision, probably for the first time, and is doing so well. We'll continue antibiotic eyedrops for two weeks and have a follow-up appointment in July to ensure all is well.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU to all of you who prayed and thought of us this week! We are incredibly blessed to have you in our lives and we thank the Lord for you!!!

1st Mother's Day

What a special day! Technically, this was my second Mommy's Day (Adiel was inside me last year), but we celebrated with our baby girl this year. Here are some photos (thanks, Dad!) for you to enjoy. Adi is 6.5 months old! In two days, she will have her eye surgery.

Medial Rectus Recession - May 12th

Medical update on our girl, Adiel:

Kirk and I took Adi to the Spokane eye specialist this past week to get an updated assessment of Adi's eyes. Dr. Snow is fantastic at what he does and after an in-depth exam, he said that in addition to ptosis, our girl has Duane's Syndrome, which is a type of Strabismus in her left eye. In simple language, it means that her left eye is unable to turn outward due to a stiff muscle connected to her eyeball. This is a result of a missing nerve. Experts are unsure of why this happens. 90% of the cases are congenital (present at birth), more girls than boys have Duane's Syndrome, and the majority of times, the left eye is the one affected.

Adiel has begun favoring her right eye so much that she lines this "good" eye up with what she's looking at, which makes her head tilted to the side. If we were to not move ahead with surgery, it is very likely that at some point, her brain would completely stop sending signals to her left eye, which would result in permanent blindness in that eye. So, the doctor recommended surgery as soon as possible.

Miss Adi is scheduled to have this surgery (Medial Rectus Recession) on Tuesday, May 12th, in the early morning. Naturally, we are concerned, but know there's a bigger plan in place. Let's pray for complete healing (that would be awesome and totally something Jesus is capable of!). If this isn't His will, prayer that the doctor would have wisdom and steady hands as he operates on her eye and that the surgery goes smoothly. He'll be cutting the muscle on the side, inner left eyeball and moving it back, thus freeing up the other muscle which will allow more eyeball movement outward. Amazing this technology is even available, isn't it? What a blessing!

We know that Adiel is God's child and that He loves her way more than we do. We trust Him completely with her. It's amazing to look at how much she has gone through in her short 6 months of life. With it all, God has shown Himself faithful and true. She is a joy and a beautiful little girl!

Thank you for your prayers and love!

Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you. - Deuteronomy 31:6

Happy Easter!

Jesus' Love for You ~ An Easter Poem

Easter bunny and eggs aside,
May the true meaning of this day not be lost.
Jesus is risen, though He died,
He loves you and expressed it on the cross.

His blood was shed so that I may live,
The price of sin needed to be paid.
My transgressions He wanted to forgive,
The greatest act of love, He displayed.

Today, Jesus rose and conquered death,
Our tomorrow can be guaranteed.
Accepting His gift of life, gives our souls rest,
Knowing Jesus loves us and He's the One we all need!

March Date

After a long day, week, and month at work (March and November are the busiest times at Banker's Life and Casualty), Kirk was pooped, but was still game for a date.

Mom and Dad had "Marmey/Papa" time with Adiel while we had dinner. This photo was taken before heading out. Thanks, Dad!

Singing Praises!

When we first moved to Pasco last year and began attending Calvary Chapel, Kirk and I had known the Lord personally for just under a year. I was so excited to serve in any way I could think of! After one of the first services we attended, I went up to our worship leader and asked him if I may audition for the worship team. He was very kind, but shared with me that before being in a leadership capacity like that, we would need to wait a year. At first I didn't understand this, but now, I see the wisdom in it.

Many of you know that music was a huge part of my life up until about three years ago, was a Music major in college, etc. From the age of 10, my primary goal in life was to do musical theater on Broadway. Before heading off to New York, I moved to Portland to gain professional experience. During this time, the Holy Spirit really began working on my heart. I did a few paid shows but suddenly, after 13+ years of loving musical theater, I found NO joy in it. It's as though the light switch was flicked off. What I didn't realize at the time was that in that darkness, the Light would begin to shine.

Long story (testimony) short, I fell into a deep, deep depression, stopped auditioning, lost all sense of who I was, and truly felt as though I had no purpose here on earth. And, music and the relationships I had with that "life" were at the center of it all.

After speaking with our worship leader a year ago and realizing there was still to much of me in my singing, I prayed to the Lord and asked Him to 1) take my voice away completely if I couldn't use it to glorify Him or 2) to please give me peace about never singing in front of anyone again. If Jesus wanted me to sing for Him in a public setting, I asked Him to prompt our worship leader to come speak to me. I vowed to never bring the subject up again, and I didn't.

Well, the Lord didn't answer the first prayer. He did give me peace on the second, however. And, once that peace was in place, our worship leader came up to me (about a month ago) and asked when I wanted to come sing for him! Completely out of the blue - A direct answer to my prayer.

On Tuesday, I auditioned for the worship team and was asked to help serve in this ministry. Amazing grace. "My grace ['unmerited favor'] is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness" - 2 Cor 12:9 This verse has been on my heart all week.

My consistent prayer is that my singing now pleases Jesus and that I may serve Him and others with this gift.

Lots of words to say, I'm singing praises to the God of the universe, Jesus Christ, Who loves us all (John 3:16) ... enough to die for all our sins and rise again so that we may come into a personal relationship with the only living God and eventually, live in perfect fellowship with Him forever! On top of this awesome gift, He makes this life worth living, gives us a very specific purpose, and works all things together for good for those who love Him and are called, according to His purpose (Rom 8:28)! Wow.

When I got home from the audition and opened our Yahoo homepage, this was the Verse of the Day:

It is good to praise the Lord and make music to your name, O Most High, to proclaim your love in the morning and your faithfulness at night, to the music of the ten-stringed lyre and the melody of the harp. For you make me glad by your deeds, O Lord; I sing for joy at the works of your hands. How great are your works, O Lord, how profound your thoughts! The senseless man does not know, fools do not understand, that though the wicked spring up like grass and all evildoers flourish, they will be forever destroyed. But you, O Lord, are exalted forever. - Psalm 92:1-8 NIV

March 22, 2009 - Happy 5th Month Birthday, Adiel!

The past five months have just flown by! We can still remember holding Adi just moments after she was born and thinking how petite she was. Now, she is in the 95 percentile for length, babbling, laughing, and doing some things that, as first-time parents, amaze us!

For example, after church today, Adiel was ready for lunch. After a few ounces, we paused for a burp break. I sat her down on my lap, facing me, and before I knew it she was reaching toward my shoulder for the burp cloth. Not only did she pull it off my shoulder, but she brought it to her mouth, burped, and held the cloth there to catch the spit up. Fancy coordination goin' on! If nothing else, she's a tidy baby.

During this momentous occasion (well, it was for us), Kirk's creative juices were a-flowin'! He was inspired to write a little ditty, using the hook from "She's a Lady" by Tom Jones. I think it's quite cute, so here it is for you to enjoy, as well. For our sweet girl, Adiel, turning 5 months today:

She's got style, she's got grace
She's got vomit on her face,
She's a Lady.

She's got sweaty little tootsies,
And a diaper full of poopsies,
She's a Lady.

All she does is flash a smile,
And Daddy's day is made worthwhile,
She's a Lady.

When she lets loose a burp,
People see me as the "perp",
She's a Lady.

When she cries for what she needs,
People with hearing start to plead,
She's a Lady.

With a sparkle in her eye,
She brings tears to Daddy's eyes,
She's a Lady,

She's My Adi.

"I Love My Uncle and Daddy!"

Here are a few shots taken while my brother, Jimmy, visited in late January. What a great uncle he is! Adi really connected with Jim. At this point, Adiel was 3 months old (my, how she's grown since then!). A couple precious ones in here with her sweet daddy, too.

CAT Scan Photos

Interesting observation by my dad: Notice how the sutures form a cross. And, in Colossians it states:

For by Him (Jesus) all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. And He is the head of the body, the church; He is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything He might have the supremacy. For God was pleased to have all His fullness dwell in Him, and through Him to reconcile to Himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through His blood, shed on the cross. ~ Colossians 1:16-20

A couple weeks ago, Adiel had a CAT scan done to rule out 'craniostenosis' - a condition that would prevent her skull from growing (due to sutures being sealed shut). Her pediatrician and opthalmologist both thought, after feeling her head, that she may have this, so they recommended we rule it out with the scan.

Jesus is so good and our prayers were answered. Adi is just fine, and as you can see in some of these pictures (taken at four months of age), her sutures are open and will allow for lots of growth. Amazing technology!

And He said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness." Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. ~ 2 Corinthians 12:9

Movie Shmoovies

Looking for a movie to rent tonight?

We keep a look-out for movies that have awesome story lines, leave you with something to think about, and are a show you would feel confident bringing your children (or grandmother) to. Here are three highly recommended selections that fit this description:

Fireproof - Newer release; a movie about relationships - AMAZING!

Facing the Giants - A few years old; I'm not a huge fan of these sporty/ra-ra movies, but this is more than that!

Flywheel - Released in 1992; First movie produced by Sherwood Pictures; Lower budget, but great story!

Next time you're in a quandary about a movie to rent, try one of these. We hope you enjoy!

Finally, brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy--meditate on these things. ~ Philippians 4:8

Squished

What a nasty bug that's going around this year! Kirk was hit with a sinus infection about a month ago. Before resorting to the doctor, we did a little research and decided to try going all naturalle. Apple cider vinegar, water, and honey. Mmm, interesting. Worth a try.

So, we tried it and after 7 doses, Kirk's sinus infection went away - a week later he was hit with bronchitis and another sinus infection - but the original bug was squished by this very concoction!

Three times a day:

Warm a half glass of WATER
Two full tablespoons of APPLE CIDER VINEGAR
As much HONEY as will help you down the stuff!

Hope this may help you or someone you know who's been bit by the sinus infection bug!

Valentine's Day Date

So, when you become a parent, date nights become a bit more challenging to do. Kirk and I are new at this and realized it had been a while since just the two of us had gone out ... hit the road ... painted the town ... had a date.

Valentine's Day was upon us and we decided to go for it! This was made possible by our amazing friends, Mike and Amanda, who watched Adiel for the evening. Adi is a lovable handful right now, as she is still working through colic and vomiting her food, so when I say "amazing" friends, that's exactly what Mike and Amanda are!

Kirk surprised me by taking me to the Italian Bistro in Walla Walla. Yummy! We had a such a lovely time and were reminded of how important it is to nurture our marriage. This isn't something that always comes naturally when everyday life so often attempts to steal our time and attention from what's most important. So, special effort and guidance from the Lord is needed. Having been through a very dark time in our marriage (where Jesus was not the center), it still amazes me how He has totally changed our relationship - all for the better! And, the best part is, it hasn't been by our own effort. We finally got out of the way, stopped resisting the most amazing Gift ever, and allowed the Holy Spirit to work!

"However, each one of you must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband." - Ephesians 5:33

A Day at the Office

Kirk had an appointment in Western Idaho about a week ago, so the three of us took a little road trip. Adiel and I stayed in Kirk's office in Walla Walla, which is about 1.5 hrs from home, and met up with Kathy, a sweet gal who also works there. She surprised us and brought her camera. Here are some super cute photos of Adiel, compliments of Kathy Farrell-Guizar - Enjoy!

A-Bloggin' We Will Go!

Greetings! Our first blog entry - I feel so "tech-y". We would love to share a little update with you, as well as some recent pictures taken of our precious gift, Adiel.

“Adi” (Ah-dee) is now 3 months old and we are having so much fun seeing her personality develop. She is smiling quite a lot now, “talks” to us, and loves being read to (some of her faves include the Picture Bible, Izzy the Lizzy, and Oscar Otter’s Opposites & Colors). She definitely lets us know when she’s hungry (as her momma learned many years ago, Adiel will need to learn how to use her “inside the universe voice”), and she is very strong! For example, she can stand up! We don’t encourage this of course (first things first: crawling, then walking, honey), but it’s pretty amazing. Kirk asked her the other day how tall she was going to be and when he questioned 6'5" (just like Daddy) she gave him a big grin. Oh, boy ...

A week ago, we visited Adiel’s eye doctor in Spokane so he could examine her eyes and determine the severity of the ptosis (pronounced “tosis”), which is a heavy eyelid. Interestingly, there a couple of other eye conditions he will be watching for (jaw-winking and strabismus), and will more easily be able to identify these in a few months. Thankfully, her eyesight is great! Please pray for complete healing, however, we know that there is a purpose and God’s will is good, whatever the outcome!

The Spokane doctor, as part of the exam, felt Adi’s skull and thought that her sutures had already closed. If this was the case, her brain would begin growing in odd ways; quite alarming, as you can imagine. He recommended a CAT scan. So, this past week, Adi went in to her pediatrician, who suggested an x-ray before resorting to a CAT scan (less radiation). He, too, felt that the sutures had closed. Many of you prayed through this whole process and “thank you”. The prayers were answered when the x-ray results showed no sign of closure in her sutures; a huge blessing and relief.

These photos are of Adiel just hanging out at home with us, Kirk feeding her, a group shot with my bro, Jimmy (who currently lives in Texas), and lastly, Adiel’s dedication at Calvary Chapel in Kennewick on January 18th. This was a super special day, as our pastor, Steve Whinery, and the whole congregation prayed that Kirk and I would have wisdom in raising our baby girl. Also, that Adiel will one day, when she is able to make the choice, receive Jesus’ gift of salvation.

“Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners - of whom I am the worst. But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his unlimited patience as an example for those who would believe on him and receive eternal life.” – 1 Timothy 1:15-16

“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” – Romans 6:23

“So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.” - Colossians 2:6-7

With Much Love,

Kirk, Lisa and Miss Adiel
